Brinsworth Comprehensive 40th Anniversary
April is the greatest month for celebrations at Brinsworth Comprehensive as the school marks a very special anniversary.
Life began 40 years ago for Brinsworth as it first opened its doors on Monday April 14, 1969. Now, 40 years later, former pupils, staff and local people are being invited to join in the celebrations.
Among the school’s former pupils and staff are Premier League football referee, Howard Webb, Gervase Phinn author and story teller, football players Ryan Taylor (Rotherham United), Leanne Hall (England Women's Team and Leeds United goalkeeper) and Rory McArdle (Rochdale Football Club), Hollyoaks actor Junade Khan and Paul Goodison MBE, the 2008 Olympic Gold Medallist in the Laser Class Sailing event.
To celebrate the school's achievements it will be having an open day on April 29 between 3pm and 5.30pm. Howard Webb and Leanne Hall will both be attending the celebration event where they will be working with some of the students in the afternoon. There will be music from the four decades, displays and competitions in the Main Hall.
Since the school opened there's been a good deal of change. It started with just 116 students and 15 staff and now has nearly 1500 students including 220 students in the Sixth Form and 185 members of staff. Additional buildings have also been added to the school to cope with the increase in numbers.
In September 2005 Brinsworth Comprehensive School was given Science College Status and was judged as an ‘Outstanding School’ by Ofsted in December 2007. It's currently planning to become a High Performing Specialist School.
Throughout the 40 years Brinsworth Comprehensive School has had three Headteachers - Dennis Morgan, Mike Gray and now the current Headteacher Richard Fone.
Richard said: "Many of our students have gone on to have very successful careers. The school has had and still has many talented students in science, sport, art, dance and drama who will one day form part of the school’s continuing success story.
"We are very privileged and delighted to extend a warm welcome to our former pupils including Howard Webb and Leanne Hall who will be helping us to celebrate.
"We would be grateful to hear from any ex-members of staff or ex-students with their memories of the school’s early years. If you have any old photos, memorabilia or anecdotes you would like to share with us we would love to hear from you.”
If you would like to tell the school where you are now and what you are doing, or if would like to receive more details of the celebration event on April 29th please contact Mrs Newton or Mrs Marriott at school after the Easter holidays on 01709 828383.
