Do you have an hour to spare in Wath-Upon-Dearne at the Montgomery Hall to do something amazing and help save a life? This is the time of year when the change in temperature brings on coughs, colds and bugs, which prevent many people from donating blood. NHS Blood and Transplant is asking for your help so blood stocks stay healthy as winter approaches. Fewer than 3% of people aged between 17 and 70 living in England have donated blood in the last year. Around 6,000 donations are needed every day to treat patients across the country. The blood you donate is used to treat critically ill patients, whether they have had cancer or other blood disorders, been in an accident, having surgery or childbirth. Blood has a shelf life of 35 days and platelets is even shorter at seven days. Some blood groups, such as O negative (the universal blood group) and B negative are vulnerable to shortfalls. So we want people with those blood groups to donate as regularly as they can. Amanda Eccles, Senior Marketing Coordinator at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “This is the time of year when coughs and colds are doing the rounds which prevent people from donating blood, so it is vital that we ask those who can give blood in Wath-Upon-Dearne to please do so and book an appointment." The whole process takes around an hour – with the actual donation taking less than ten minutes. The blood you give is precious – it saves lives. Every unit of blood given to a patient has come from a valued voluntary donor, and help save and improve up to three lives.” We also need more young people in Wath-Upon-Dearne to start giving blood to replace those who can no longer donate, and to ensure we have the right mix of blood groups to match patient needs in the future. In particular we need more black and South Asian donors. Anyone aged between 17 and 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. To register and book an appointment call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk. Blood donor session times: 12:25 - 15:25 / 16:15 - 19:15 Please note that the session will be closed between 15:25..
Blood is something we all expect to be there for us when we need it, yet only 4% of us give blood. Many people would not be alive today if it wasn't for the generosity of our donors. Every day 6,000 units of blood are needed by hospitals. Could you donate some time to save a life?
